Damariscotta is a charming little fishing village across the Damariscotta River. Newcastle and Damariscotta are known as the twin towns of Lincoln County. The entire area was heavily inhabited by early native Americans who left several artifacts and archeological sites. Damariscotta has most of the businesses, restaurants and lodging for this area. US Route 1A travels through Damariscotta and rejoins US Route 1 about 2.5 miles north.

In order to arrive at the town center travelers heading North must exit Route 1 onto Maine Street.
