Welcome to Bath, Maine

Bath, Maine named after Bath in Somerset, England sits at the mouth Maine’s largest river, the Kennebec. Because of the easy navigation to Casco Bay and then into the Atlantic Ocean, Bath has always been home to shipbuilding. Even today, there are several small shipyards, creating personal yachts. The greatest shipbuilder is Bath Iron Works. BIW, employing thousands of craftsmen, stills builds large warships for the US Navy. Although tours are not offered, BIW can be viewed from the large bridge spanning the Kennebec River, A special site to behold is when BIW launches one of its creations and sends it splashing into the river. Bath’s Maritime Museum is the best place to start to get a feel of the shipbuilding heritage. The museum does offer a trolley tour of the shipyards during the summer months. US Route 1 mostly passes over the city. For northbound travelers you need to exit Route 1 and take the Granite Street exit and turn left at the bottom of the ramp. The downtown area hosts many fine antiques, artisans and other specialty shops. Bath’s Federal, Greek Revival, and Italianate architecture is a large calling for tourists. Many of the large buildings belonged to the shipbuilding giants of an earlier era.
POPHAM BEACH & FORT POPHAM
- Take the High Street (ME 209) exit and head for Popham Beach State Park. Popham Beach is one of the largest in Maine. Its dramatic tides make for interesting walking and exploring. Continue past the beach entrance and check out Fort Popham. On the way back, take a right and park your car in the small parking lot and take the short hike up to the WW II Fort Baldwin.
